How to start a locksmith business: the complete guide

Start a locksmith business in the right order: training, license check, EIN, insurance, van and tools, pricing, phones and first jobs, with sourced numbers.

LockCommand Blog, Starting a locksmith business. How to start a locksmith business. A van door with a black magnetic sign that reads Your name, Locksmith, its corner peeling as it goes on.

Short answer

To start a locksmith business, learn the trade, check whether your state or city licenses locksmiths, register the business and get an EIN, insure it, equip a van, price your jobs from your costs, set up your phones, and claim your Google listing. Do them in that order.

Key takeaways

  • Check your license rule before you spend money. 13 states license, register or permit locksmiths statewide.
  • In several licensing states, insurance is part of the license, so buy the policy first.
  • Pick a lane before you shop for tools. Car keys add a NASTF registration and a programmer.
  • Your pay has a floor: employed locksmiths earned a median $24.68 an hour in May 2025.
  • Set up the phone before the ad. A locked-out caller who gets voicemail calls the next listing.

You can start a locksmith business with a van, a kit and a phone that gets answered. What trips people up is the order: which rule to check, which bill to pay and which job to take first.

This guide shows how to start a locksmith business in eight steps. Each section gives the answer first, then the numbers to check.

What do you need to start a locksmith business?

Eight things, in a set order. Training comes first, the license check comes before you spend money, and the phone is set up before the ad.

Open in this order. A cabinet of eight drawers: 1 Train, 2 License, 3 Register, 4 Insure, 5 Equip, 6 Price, 7 Phones, 8 Customers. Start at the top left.

Ask your state board or city in writing whether locksmiths need a license, a registration or a permit.

Insurance sits before the license application in some states. In Alabama, Texas, Maryland, Louisiana and New Jersey, liability insurance is a condition of the company license, so the policy comes first.

How do you learn the trade before you open?

Work for a licensed shop or take hands-on classes first, then open. Learn on someone else's customers.

The survey leaves out the self-employed and business owners, so these figures describe people who work for a shop. They also set your floor: after business costs, your own pay should beat what a shop would pay you.

Path 1

Work for a shop

Some states build this in. In Texas an individual locksmith must work for a licensed company. In New Jersey the license needs 3 years of hands-on work or a 2-year Labor Department apprenticeship.

Path 2

Take a class

ALOA runs more than 200 classes a year, including a five-day Fundamentals of Locksmithing course in Dallas.

Path 3

Earn a certification

ALOA's entry-level Certified Registered Locksmith takes the mandatory exam plus two electives. It is a certification, not a state license.

Do you need a license to start a locksmith business?

It depends on your state. 13 states license, register or permit locksmiths statewide, and the other 37 states and DC do not, though some cities do.

What the 13 ask for, according to our license data:

  • A criminal history check. Every one of the 13 looks at it, usually with fingerprints.
  • An exam. Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon and Virginia test individuals. Texas tests the company applicant.
  • Experience or training. New Jersey asks for 10 hours of training. Virginia asks for 18.
  • Insurance. Covered in its own section below.
Which license rule applies to a new locksmith shop A new shop drops through two gates. Gate 1 asks whether the state licenses locksmiths. If yes, which is true in 13 states, the shop goes to the state board. If not, gate 2 asks whether the city or county has a rule. If yes, the shop goes to the local office. If neither applies, the shop still registers for a business license and sales tax. Your shop State license? City rule? Run three checks

  1. Check the state

Look your state up in our free locksmith license tool, then confirm with the board it names.

  2. Check your city and county

New York has no state license, but New York City, Nassau County and Yonkers license locksmiths. Florida's county locksmith licenses ended on July 1, 2025, when Fla. Stat. 163.211 expired grandfathered local licenses.

  3. Check what you call yourself

In Texas, Occupations Code 1702.1056 makes you a locksmith company for any one of three reasons.

Texas: any one of these. Sells, installs or services locks. OR. Advertises as a locksmith. OR. Locksmith in the company name. Any one makes you a locksmith company, Occupations Code 1702.1056.
Texas counts you as a locksmith company on any one of three triggers.

Texas also requires government ID and a signed statement of ownership before you open a property for a customer (Sec. 1702.2865). Our free lockout authorization form has the lines for both.

How do you register a locksmith business and handle taxes?

Pick a structure, get a free EIN, open a business bank account and ask your state about sales tax. None of it takes long, and all of it comes before your first invoice.

Sole proprietorshipLLC
You can be held personally liable for business debts.Owners are not personally liable in most instances.
Profit is taxed on your personal return.Profit passes through to your personal return.

That is the SBA's summary of business structures. An LLC protects your house and savings in most instances, but it does not replace insurance.

Three registrations to check before your first invoice:

  • EIN. It is free from the IRS, and the online application issues it immediately. The IRS warns against sites that charge for one.
  • Sales tax. It differs by state. South Dakota taxes locksmith services by statute (SDCL 10-45-5.2), so ask your state revenue department what applies to labor, keys and trip fees.
  • Local business license. The SBA says counties and cities may require licenses or permits even though you usually don't register with them to form a business. Check both websites.

What insurance does a locksmith business need?

Start with general liability and commercial auto, and buy both before the first job. Where a state licenses locksmiths, the minimum is in the law.

General liability covers bodily injury, property damage and the cost of defending a lawsuit, according to the SBA. A personal auto policy usually won't cover an accident while you're working, so ask your insurer in writing about the van.

Where a state sets the minimum, it looks like this:

StateInsurance the license requiresRule
Alabama$250,000 general liabilityAESBL
Louisiana$500,000 certificate of insuranceLAC 55:V.3219
Maryland$300,000 general liabilityBus. Reg. 12.5-205
New Jersey$500,000 general liability plus a $10,000 bond or insuranceN.J.A.C. 13:31A-2.6
Texas$100,000 per occurrence, $200,000 aggregateOcc. Code 1702.124

Once you hire, workers' compensation comes into play, and some states add their own rules.

How much does it cost to start a locksmith business?

It depends on your lane, which is why the startup guides we checked give totals from $6,300 to $40,500. Pick the lane first, then price it.

How many jobs do you need each month to break even?

Add your monthly costs to your own pay, then divide by what one job earns after parts. In the example below that is 46 jobs a month, about 11 a week.

Your pay target starts from the BLS median: $24.68 an hour for 2,080 hours is about $4,278 a month.

How should a new locksmith business answer the phone?

Decide how every call gets answered before you pay for an ad. A locked-out caller who reaches voicemail calls the next listing.

How do you get your first locksmith customers?

Claim your Google Business Profile, plan for Google's locksmith screening, and visit the businesses that need a locksmith all year.

  • Set up as a service-area business. Google says these businesses should hide their address and does not accept P.O. boxes or unstaffed virtual offices.
  • Use your real business name. Google wants the name on your signs and stationery, with no taglines, hours, phone numbers or service descriptions added.
  • Expect extra screening for ads. Google says locksmiths go through additional screening, including service professional background checks and Advanced Verification. Our free Google verification checklist walks the steps.
  • Visit repeat buyers. Property managers, realtors and car dealers need locksmiths all year. Our flyer maker prints door hangers for them.

Questions locksmiths ask

Can I start a locksmith business with no experience?
You can open the business, but you shouldn't work alone on customers yet. Several licensing states require experience or supervised work before you can hold a license, and one bad job on a customer's lock costs more than a few months as an employee. Work for a shop or take hands-on classes first, then open.
How much money does a locksmith business owner make?
It depends on your jobs per month, your prices and your costs, so no figure is safe to promise. For a floor, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $24.68 an hour for employed locksmiths in May 2025. Work out your own number with a break-even sheet like the one in this guide.
Can I run a locksmith business from home?
Often yes, but check zoning first. The SBA says home-based businesses may have fewer restrictions but can still be subject to local zoning, and it points you to your city's planning department. Google also wants service-area businesses to hide their address, and it does not accept P.O. boxes or unstaffed virtual offices as a location.
Do I need a business license if my state doesn't license locksmiths?
Maybe. A state locksmith license is separate from the general business licenses a city or county can require. The SBA says local governments may require licenses or permits even when you don't register with them to form the business, so call your city and county offices. Some states also tax locksmith services, which you register for with the revenue department.
Do I need NASTF registration to program car keys?
Yes, for the security work. NASTF says locksmiths who program keys, order security codes or reset immobilizers must register. A primary account costs $435 for two years, as of October 2026, and an employee account costs $250. You can start with house and business work and add this later.
Is an ALOA certification the same as a locksmith license?
No. A license, registration or permit comes from a state or local government. ALOA's Certified Registered Locksmith credential is a trade association certification, earned by passing a mandatory exam plus two electives. It can build skill and trust with customers, but it does not replace a legal license where one is required.
