Start your shop on LockCommandHow to use it
Starting out, it's easy to price the van and the key machine and forget the insurance, the stock of key blanks and the months before the phone rings steadily. This calculator lays out a first-year budget line by line, then shows how many months of work it takes to earn the startup money back.
How to use it
- Go down the list and replace each example amount with a real quote. Delete lines you don't need and add your own.
- Switch any line between one time and every month. A financed van is a monthly payment, not a one-time cost.
- Enter a realistic number of jobs a week for your first year, your average ticket, and what parts cost as a share of a ticket.
- Decide what you'll pay yourself each month, and keep a cushion for surprises.
- Print the budget or save it as a PDF to take to the bank or your accountant.
What the numbers mean
- Cash to start is every one-time cost plus the cushion.
- First year in total is the cash to start plus twelve months of monthly costs.
- Left each month is the money in from jobs, minus parts, minus monthly costs, minus your pay. A month is 52 weeks ÷ 12.
- Startup money back in is cash to start ÷ what's left each month. If nothing is left, it never comes back at those numbers.
A worked example
With the example lines, one-time costs come to $32,300. A 10% cushion adds $3,230, so you need $35,530 to start. Monthly costs are $1,380. At 15 jobs a week with a $150 average ticket, money in is $9,750 a month, or $8,287.50 after 15% for parts. Take out $1,380 of costs and $3,000 of pay and $3,907.50 is left each month, so the startup money comes back in about 9.1 months. These are example numbers. Yours will be different.
Before you spend
- Check whether your state licenses locksmiths with our locksmith license by state page. Where a license is required, the board's own page lists what it asks for.
- Get general liability insurance quotes from more than one agent. Ask whether your work on cars, homes and businesses is covered.
- Buy the key machine and programmer for the work you'll take in your first months, not for every job you might take one day.
- Once you know your costs, work out your hourly cost and minimum ticket and build your price book.
