The phrases shown above, small enough to fold into the van's visor. Search or pick a category first to print fewer.

LockCommand's AI receptionist answers in English, Spanish or both, and switches when the caller speaks Spanish.

Turn on Spanish calls

How to use it

You don't need to be fluent to handle a Spanish-speaking caller well. You need the twenty or so questions every job runs on, said clearly and politely, and the words to explain ID and price. That's what this phrasebook covers. The phrases are short on purpose: one idea each, so they work when you're reading off your phone in a parking lot.

How to use it

  1. Search in English or Spanish. Accents don't matter, so “direccion” finds “dirección”.
  2. Or pick a category: greeting and safety, address, car details, proof of ownership, price, timing, on the job, and finishing up.
  3. Press Play to hear it. Tick Slow speech while you're learning.
  4. Copy one phrase into a text, or copy the whole list on screen.
  5. Print the pocket sheet for the van. It prints only what's on screen, so filter first if you want a short one.

Reading the pronunciation guide

Every guide follows the same rules, worked out from the Spanish spelling. Read each part as English and stress the part in capitals. Spanish stress is regular: words ending in a vowel, n or s stress the second-to-last part (llave, YAH-beh); other words stress the last part (motor, moh-TOR); a written accent overrides both (dirección, dee-rek-SYOHN). A few more:

SpellingSounds likeExample
ll, yy in “yes”llave, YAH-beh
j, g before e or ih in “hat”trabajo, trah-BAH-hoh
ñny in “canyon”mañana, mah-NYAH-nah
rr, or r at the starta rolled rcarro, KAH-rroh
va soft bfavor, fah-BOR
hsilentahora, ah-OH-rah

On the phone

The phrases that matter most are the safety question and the 911 line. If a child or a pet is locked in a hot car, the caller needs to hear “cuelgue y llame al 911” (hang up and call 911), said as nueve, uno, uno. After that, get the name and a callback number before anything else. The phone script builder puts all of these in order for your shop, in both languages.

On the job

Proof of ownership is where a language gap causes trouble, so those phrases are direct: you need a photo ID, and something with their name and the address, or the car's registration or title. The lockout authorization form can go with them for the signature.

Questions

Is this Spanish from Spain or from Latin America?
Latin American, kept neutral so callers from Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America all understand it. Where a word changes by country, like carro, auto or coche for a car, the note under the phrase says so.
Why do the phrases use usted instead of tú?
Usted is the polite form for talking to a customer you don't know. Nobody minds being called usted, and some callers do mind tú from a stranger in their driveway at midnight.
Why doesn't the Play button work?
Play uses the speech voices built into your phone or computer. If none of them speaks Spanish, the button stays off. Add a Spanish voice in your device's speech or language settings and reload the page. The written guide works either way.
How do I read the pronunciation guide?
Say each part the way it looks in English and stress the part in capitals. RR is a rolled r. The Spanish v sounds like a soft b, so it's written as b. The h is always silent.
Can I print just the car phrases?
Yes. Pick Car details in the category list, or search a word, then press Print pocket sheet. The sheet prints only the phrases on screen.
