## How to budget for a new locksmith business

Starting out, it's easy to price the van and the key machine and forget the insurance, the stock of key blanks and the months before the phone rings steadily. This calculator lays out a first-year budget line by line, then shows how many months of work it takes to earn the startup money back.

### What you need to start a mobile locksmith business

The calculator opens with the usual lines for a one-person mobile shop. The ranges below are the example ranges shown in the calculator, there to show how the budget works. They are not market prices: get quotes from dealers, suppliers and insurance agents near you.

| Line | Paid | Example range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Van (used, bought outright) | One time | $8,000–$35,000 |
| Van upfit: shelves, drawers, power | One time | $1,000–$8,000 |
| Key duplicating machine | One time | $800–$6,000 |
| Car key programmer | One time | $1,000–$8,000 |
| Hand tools and lockout kit | One time | $500–$3,000 |
| Key blanks and lock stock | One time | $1,000–$5,000 |
| Licensing, where required | One time | $0–$1,000 |
| General liability insurance | Monthly | $80–$400 |
| Marketing: ads and listings | Monthly | $100–$2,000 |
| Fuel | Monthly | $200–$1,000 |

### How to use the calculator

1. Go down the list and replace each example amount with a real quote. Delete lines you don't need and add your own.
2. Switch any line between one time and every month. A financed van is a monthly payment, not a one-time cost.
3. Enter a realistic number of jobs a week for your first year, your average ticket, and what parts cost as a share of a ticket.
4. Decide what you'll pay yourself each month, and keep a cushion for surprises.
5. Print the budget or save it as a PDF to take to the bank or your accountant.

### What the numbers mean

- **Cash to start** is every one-time cost plus the cushion.
- **First year in total** is the cash to start plus twelve months of monthly costs.
- **Left each month** is the money in from jobs, minus parts, minus monthly costs, minus your pay. A month is 52 weeks ÷ 12.
- **Startup money back in** is cash to start ÷ what's left each month. If nothing is left, it never comes back at those numbers.

### A worked example

With the example lines, one-time costs come to $32,300. A 10% cushion adds $3,230, so you need $35,530 to start. Monthly costs are $1,380. At 15 jobs a week with a $150 average ticket, money in is $9,750 a month, or $8,287.50 after 15% for parts. Take out $1,380 of costs and $3,000 of pay and $3,907.50 is left each month, so the startup money comes back in about 9.1 months. At 10 jobs a week instead of 15, only $1,145 is left each month and it takes about 2.6 years. These are example numbers. Yours will be different.

### Steps to start a locksmith business

1. Get trained. Many locksmiths learn through an apprenticeship or a course, then practice on locks they own.
2. Check the rules where you work. Our [locksmith license by state](https://lockcommand.com/tools/locksmith-license) page shows which states license locksmiths and links to each board.
3. Register the business with your state, and get a free employer identification number (EIN) from the IRS if you need one.
4. Get general liability insurance quotes from more than one agent. Ask whether your work on cars, homes and businesses is covered.
5. Buy the key machine and programmer for the work you'll take in your first months, not for every job you might take one day.
6. Set your prices. Work out your [hourly cost and minimum ticket](https://lockcommand.com/tools/hourly-rate-calculator) , then build a price list from it.
7. Get a business phone number and a plan for the calls you can't answer while you're on a job.

### Break-even, the SBA way

The U.S. Small Business Administration describes break-even as the point where money in equals money out, and suggests adding a little extra, about 10%, for costs you didn't expect. The calculator follows the same idea: it adds your cushion to the one-time costs, then counts the months until what's left each month has paid them back.

## Questions

### How much does it cost to start a mobile locksmith business?

It depends on whether you buy a van outright, which key machines and programmers you need for the work you'll take, and your state's licensing. Someone starting with home lockouts and rekeys in a van they already own needs far less than someone doing car keys from day one. That's why this calculator starts with example amounts and asks you to replace them with real quotes.

### Can I start a locksmith business with little money?

Many locksmiths start small: a van they already own, a basic lockout kit, a key machine and a few common key blanks, taking house and business work first. Car key programmers can wait until the jobs call for them. Set the lines you don't need yet to 0 and see what's left.

### Do I need a license to be a locksmith?

Some states license locksmiths and some don't, and a few cities and counties have their own rules. Check our locksmith license by state page, then confirm with the licensing board it links to.

### How long does it take to earn the startup money back?

Divide the cash you need to start by what's left each month after parts, running costs and your own pay. With the example numbers it's about 9 months. With fewer jobs a week or a bigger van loan it can be years, which is worth knowing before you buy.

### Should the van be a one-time or a monthly cost?

If you buy it with cash, one time. If you finance or lease it, switch the line to monthly and enter the payment. You can do the same for a key programmer you pay off over time.

### What is the cushion for?

Costs you forgot. The SBA suggests adding a little extra, about 10%, for surprises. Set it to 0 if you've already padded your numbers.

### Why does break-even count my own pay?

Because the business hasn't paid you back if you're living on savings. Set your pay to 0 to see when the business alone covers its startup costs, then put your real number back.
