## How to set up a locksmith price list

A price list (some shops call it a price book or a rate sheet) is the list you quote from. With one, every phone quote sounds the same no matter who answers, and you stop making up a number while the caller waits. This builder gives you a starting list of common locksmith jobs, lets you set your own prices, and prints a one page sheet you can keep in the van or by the office phone.

### What a locksmith price list should include

- **Every job you take** , grouped the way callers ask for them: house and apartment, cars and keys, business, and safes.
- **A low and a high price** for each job. Low is the quick version. High is the slow one: an old lock, a high security cylinder, a car that fights you.
- **How the price is counted** when it isn't per visit, like "Rekey, per cylinder" or "Key copy, per key".
- **Your trip fee** (service call fee), if you charge one on every job.
- **Your after-hours charge** and the hours it applies, so nobody argues about whether 7 PM is "night".
- **One line about parts and the final price** , so the caller knows the range is for labor and the price is confirmed on site.

### How to use the builder

1. Remove the jobs you don't do with the bin button. Add the ones you do from the buttons under each section.
2. Type a low and a high price for each job. Prices take dollars and cents, like 95 or 95.50.
3. Add your own jobs with "Your own job", and pick the closest kind of job so LockCommand files it in the right place.
4. Set a trip fee if you charge one on every call. Use 0 if your prices already cover the drive.
5. Turn on the after-hours charge, pick a dollar amount or a percent, and set the hours. Tick weekends if Saturday and Sunday count all day.
6. Add your shop name and phone number, then print the sheet, save it as a PDF, or copy it as text into a note on your phone.

### How to set each price

Start with your floor, not with what the shop down the road charges. The [hourly cost calculator](https://lockcommand.com/tools/hourly-rate-calculator) shows what an hour on the road costs you and the smallest ticket worth the drive. The low end of each range should sit at or above that minimum ticket for the time the job takes. The high end is what the same job costs when it goes badly: a seized cylinder, a second trip to the van, a car that needs a different tool.

Keep the high end honest. If you end up above the high price often, raise it, because a caller who hears $95 to $165 and pays $240 won't call you again. If you rarely get near the high end, tighten the range, since a narrow range sounds more sure of itself on the phone.

Car keys vary by make, model and year, so one line per key type is only a start. The car key quote builder, linked at the bottom of this page, walks through the questions to ask before you give a car key price.

### Dollar amount or percent after hours?

Both work, and the sheet shows the after-hours price next to each job either way. A dollar amount is added to both ends of the range. A percent is applied to both ends.

| After-hours charge | After-hours price | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Add $50 | $145–$215 | Easy to say on the phone. Fits jobs where the night cost is mostly your time. |
| Add 25% | $118.75–$206.25 | Grows with bigger jobs, like a safe opening or an all keys lost car. |
| Add 50% | $142.50–$247.50 | Shops that would rather not work nights unless it pays well. |

Not sure what your night charge should be? The [job profit and after-hours calculator](https://lockcommand.com/tools/job-profit-calculator) works it out from one real job: the extra pay for a night call, the card fee on the surcharge, and any extra profit you want.

### A worked example

Say you charge $95 to $165 for a car lockout, a $35 trip fee, and $50 more from 6 PM to 8 AM. A caller locked out at 10 PM hears a range of $145 to $215 for the lockout plus the $35 trip fee, so $180 to $250 in all. On paper, the sheet lists the lockout at $95–$165 with $145–$215 in the after-hours column, and the footer explains both fees, so a new tech or a dispatcher quotes the same way you would.

### Quoting from your price list on the phone

1. Ask what the job is and where. A house lockout and a car lockout are different lines on the sheet.
2. Give the range for that job, then the trip fee, then the after-hours charge if it applies right now.
3. Say what can push the price to the high end, like a high security lock or a key that needs programming.
4. Tell the caller you confirm the final price on site before you start, and do it.

Some states and cities license locksmiths and set their own rules for the trade. Check yours with the [locksmith license by state](https://lockcommand.com/tools/locksmith-license) page and the board it links to.

### What other locksmiths charge

We don't publish local prices, because they change by city and by year. For a national sanity check, Locksmith Ledger's 2023 price survey of locksmiths put the average service call at $90, the average hourly rate at $95 and the average lockout call at $110, mostly before parts. Your own costs matter more than any average, so use those figures to spot a price that is far off, not to set one.

### Using your price list in LockCommand

The button under the sheet carries your price list to the sign-up page. When you create your shop, your jobs replace the starter price list, your trip fee becomes a travel fee and your after-hours charge becomes your night surcharge with the same hours. The trip fee applies once you set your shop's location. The AI receptionist then quotes callers from your ranges and adds the surcharges that apply at the time of the call. When two of your jobs are the same kind, like two lock changes, the receptionist quotes the first one on the list, so keep your main job at the top of each kind. Nothing is sent anywhere until you click the button, and this page doesn't store your prices.

## Questions

### How much does a locksmith charge for a lockout?

It depends on the city, the time and the lock. In Locksmith Ledger's 2023 national price survey, the average lockout call was $110, the average service call $90 and the average hourly rate $95. Treat those as a sanity check, not your price. Work out your own floor with the hourly cost calculator, then set a range that covers a quick job and a slow one.

### Why a low and a high price instead of one price?

Two lockouts are rarely the same job. A range lets you quote on the phone without boxing yourself in, and the final price is confirmed on site before you start. Keep the range tight enough that the caller isn't surprised at the door.

### Should a locksmith charge a trip fee?

Many do, because the drive costs the same whether the job is a $25 key copy or a $400 safe opening. If you charge one, say it on every quote and put it on the sheet. If your prices already cover the drive, set the trip fee to 0.

### How much more should I charge after hours?

Enough that a night job pays you at least as well as the same job in the day, after the extra pay, the lost sleep and the card fee on the surcharge. The job profit calculator works that number out from one real job. Then enter it here as a dollar amount or a percent.

### Are the starter prices what locksmiths charge in my area?

No. They are round example numbers so the sheet isn't empty when it opens. Prices change by city, by season and by job. Replace every price with your own before you print or use it.

### What happens when I click Use this price book in LockCommand?

You go to the sign-up page with your price book in the link. When you create your shop, your jobs replace LockCommand's starter prices, the trip fee becomes a travel fee and the after-hours fee becomes your night surcharge with your hours. You can change all of it later in Settings. The list holds up to 100 jobs, the number of services the AI receptionist quotes from.

### Does this tool save my prices?

No. Everything stays in this browser tab and is gone when you close it. Print the sheet, save it as a PDF or copy it as text before you leave.
