## How to work out what missed calls cost

A missed call hurts a locksmith more than most trades. Someone locked out of a car at 11 PM wants a locksmith on the way now, so when your phone rings out they call the next shop on the list. This calculator turns your own numbers into money, so you can decide what answering every call is worth to you.

### Why missed calls cost locksmiths more

- **Most calls are urgent.** A lockout caller is standing outside a door. They rarely leave a voicemail and wait.
- **You miss calls while you work.** A solo locksmith is on a job, driving or under a dashboard for much of the day, which is exactly when the phone rings.
- **Night calls pay the most.** After-hours jobs often carry a surcharge, so a missed call at night costs more than one at noon.
- **A lost caller is often a lost customer.** Whoever answers the lockout is the locksmith that caller saves for the next rekey.

### How to use the calculator

1. Count the calls you missed last week. Include calls that went to voicemail and callers who hung up.
2. Enter your average job price, trip fee included.
3. Enter the share of answered calls that turn into a job today. If 6 of every 10 calls you answer become a job, enter 60%.
4. Enter the share of those callers who would call someone else rather than wait. For lockouts this is usually high. For a rekey next week it may be low.

### Where to find each number

| Number | Where to find it | Tip |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Calls missed a week | Your phone's call log, or your carrier's or phone app's call history | Use a normal week. Count each caller once if they tried twice. |
| Average job price | Last month's revenue ÷ last month's number of jobs | Include the trip fee and after-hours charges you collected. |
| Share who would have booked | Answered calls that became jobs ÷ answered calls | Leave out wrong numbers and sales calls. |
| Share who call someone else | Your judgment: how many missed callers ever called back? | Higher for lockouts and nights, lower for scheduled work. |

### How the cost is worked out

Jobs lost each week = calls missed × share who would have booked × share who call someone else. Money lost = jobs lost × average job price. A month is 52 weeks divided by 12, or about 4.33 weeks, and a year is 52 weeks. The calculator only counts callers who would have booked and then went elsewhere, so it doesn't blame every missed call for a lost job.

### A worked example

You miss 10 calls a week, 60% of callers usually book, 70% of those would call another shop, and your average ticket is $150. That is 10 × 0.6 × 0.7 = 4.2 jobs a week, or $630 a week.

| Period | Jobs lost | Money lost |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A week | 4.2 | $630 |
| A month (4.33 weeks) | 18.2 | $2,730 |
| A year (52 weeks) | 218.4 | $32,760 |

If only half of those callers went elsewhere instead of 70%, the year would still be $23,400. Try a low and a high guess for the last box to see the range.

### What the missed-call statistics online say

Search for missed call statistics and you'll find big numbers about how many calls small businesses miss and how few callers leave a voicemail. Most of them come from companies that sell answering services or call tracking, and we haven't found one that studied locksmith calls. That's why this calculator asks for your numbers instead of filling in an industry average. As a check on your average ticket, Locksmith Ledger's 2023 price survey put the average lockout call at $110 and the average service call at $90 across the locksmiths who answered it.

### Ways to miss fewer calls

- Forward your line to a second phone or a person while you're on a job or driving.
- Text every missed caller back within a minute or two, so at least some wait for you. LockCommand's [missed-call text-back](https://lockcommand.com/features/customer-texts) does this on its own.
- Use an answering service or an AI receptionist for nights and weekends. Our [answering service guide](https://lockcommand.com/locksmith-answering-service) compares voicemail, a human service and an AI receptionist, and what each one misses.
- Keep a short phone script, so whoever picks up asks the same questions and quotes the same way.

### Comparing it with LockCommand

The second box compares a month of lost work with our cheapest plan. That is our own price, $149.99 a month for Solo with 200 AI receptionist minutes, and it comes straight from our [pricing page](https://lockcommand.com/pricing). Busy shops can use more minutes than that, so check the per-minute prices there too. The comparison is only as good as your numbers, so use a normal week.

## Questions

### How do I calculate revenue lost from missed calls?

Multiply the calls you miss in a week by the share of callers who would have booked, then by the share of those who call another locksmith instead of waiting. That gives lost jobs a week. Multiply by your average ticket for lost money a week, by 52 for a year, and divide the year by 12 for a month.

### Where do I find how many calls I miss?

Your phone's recent calls list shows missed calls with the time. Your carrier's online account or your business phone app usually keeps a longer history. Count a normal week, not a holiday week, and include calls that went to voicemail.

### Do callers call back after a missed call?

Some do, especially for work that can wait, like a rekey next week. Someone locked out of a car or a house usually calls the next locksmith on the list instead. That's why the calculator asks for the share who call someone else, and why you may want a higher number for lockouts than for scheduled work.

### Is there an industry number for missed calls I can use?

Most missed-call statistics online come from companies that sell answering services, and none we found studied locksmith calls. The calculator doesn't assume one. Your own call log is a better number than any average.

### Should I count after-hours calls?

Yes, if you would take the job. Night lockouts are often the calls that go to voicemail, and they're also the callers least likely to wait for a call back.

### What does LockCommand cost compared with this?

Our cheapest plan, Solo, is $149.99 a month with 200 AI receptionist minutes included. Minutes past that are charged per minute. The pricing page has the full list.
